Why e-ink
A frame that behaves like a picture.
Colour e-paper, often called e-ink, is the same kind of display as an e-reader, now in colour. Tiny particles of pigment are moved into place, then left alone.
Calm
No backlight means no glow in the hallway at night and nothing lighting up the bedroom.
Readable in daylight
It reflects light the way paper does, so bright rooms and sunny walls suit it.
Holds with no power
The picture stays on the frame even with a flat battery. Power only goes into changing it.
Goes anywhere
Above the stairs, beside the front door, on the bookshelf: wherever it looks best, not where the socket is.
To be fair
When an LCD frame is the better choice
E-ink isn't for everyone. A screen-based frame suits you better if you want:
- Video, or photos that change every few seconds as a slideshow. ITOY shows one picture and changes it when someone sends a new one, taking about a minute to draw it.
- Colours exactly as they look on your phone. Six inks give a softer, more painterly result, closer to a print than a screen.
- To send from anywhere today. ITOY sends from a phone on the same Wi-Fi as your own frame, which is why it comes in pairs.

E-ink photo frames, answered
Is e-ink better than LCD for a photo frame?
It depends what you want. E-ink looks like a print, doesn't glow and can run on a battery with no cable. LCD is brighter, shows exact colours and can play video. For a photo that lives on the wall like a picture, e-ink suits; for slideshows and video, a screen does.
Do e-ink photo frames need to be plugged in?
No. E-ink only uses power to change the picture, so frames like ITOY run on a rechargeable battery and are charged over USB-C when they need it.
Can e-ink show colour photos?
Yes. Colour e-paper mixes a small set of real inks as fine dots, the way a printed poster does. ITOY's panel has six: black, white, red, yellow, blue and green. Colours are softer than a screen's, more like a print.
Why does an e-ink frame take a while to change the picture?
Moving pigment takes longer than switching pixels. ITOY takes about a minute to draw a new picture, with a few colour flashes on the way. Once it's drawn, it stays with no power at all.
Does an e-ink frame glow at night?
No. With no backlight it's only visible when the room is lit, just like a framed print.
